This morning, saw an update in the iOS App Store for Microsoft SharePoint App and I am so pleased to see this update that it triggered me to publish this post.

You may think, what triggered me off?

Ok, so let’s summarise the issue here and before you update the Microsoft SharePoint App, try out the this scenario below.

Steps:

Desktop

  • Browse to a SharePoint Online Site (SPO)
  • Copy URL of the site from the browser
  • Email yourself this link

Mail App (Mobile)

  • Open the mail app (Native / Outlook)
  • Click on the link of the SPO site (that you have emailed yourself)

Browser App (Mobile)

  • You will note that the link will open in the browser app of your choice on the mobile!
  • You need to login to the SPO tenancy (does not matter if you are using a managed device, have MFA, etc.) If the link opens in the browser app of your choice, you will need to authenticate!

Not a great user experience and is a major contention in our current project.

Post Update of the SharePoint Mobile App

  • Opens the content – page, news or links list in the SharePoint App
  • No login required if you have installed and configured the SharePoint App previously
  • Seamless experience

This update does not open a word, excel or powerpoint mobile app if you have received links to these in your email. Looking forward to that update from the awesome Microsoft Teams!
