HowTo: Determine BIOS Version Without A Restart

I want to upgrade my workstation’s BIOS. Having to close down all my applications and restart the workstation to note BIOS version is definitely a smart thing to do. Is it? Well what is Windows System Information for?

Following are two ways you can check out the bios version without restarting.

1. From the Registry

Changing the values in the registry will have no effect on the system. This is for information only.

2. Open Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information. Here you will find System Summary on the left and its contents on the right. Find the BIOS Version option and your BIOS flash version displayed.

I am sure this can be determined in an open source platform like *nix as well. Have you tried this before?
