Microsoft Office 365 subscribers are in for a treat with the latest update in “Current Channel” release for Office 365 client applications. In Version 1707 (Build 8326.2058) noteworthy feature update is in the Excel app.

Until now, co-authoring an Excel file in the Office 365 Excel app unlike Word or PowerPoint, was not possible. Recollect, how you would get a pop-up dialog that showed you that file is locked by [insert co-worker name here] and you could either open read-only version, be notified when file was available to edit?

With the recent update, if you:

  • Are on a Windows desktop
  • Have an Office 365 subscriber
  • Have installed the latest version of Office
  • Have signed in to Office with Office 365 subscription account
  • Have your file saved as .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xlsb files
  • Have shared the file with your colleague (edit permissions)
  • Have enabled AutoSave in Excel

You are set to co-author an Excel file on your Windows!

Although this feature is currently not available for Mac, it is available in the following:

  • Excel for Android,
  • Excel for iOS,
  • Excel Mobile, and
  • Excel 2016 for Office 365 subscribers
